Paris Concert [DVD] [Import]

Al Foster's one of my favorite drummers, very fluid, musical, and he swings hard. This was filmed at the New Morning club in Paris in 2007. The band is first rate, tight and communicating well with each other, consisting of Doug Weiss on bass, George Colligan and Aaron Goldberg piano, Eli Degibri sax, and Eddie Henderson on trumpet (hadn't seen much of him since his Herbie Hancock/'70s days). The music is straight ahead jazz, some interesting arrangements of old standards and rearrangements of a couple of old funk tunes that appeared on Al's 1970s album "Mixed Roots" appearing here as "Aloysius" (originally "Mixed Roots") and "The Chief" (originally "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"). The video work is very good; I seem to have had bad luck lately with jazz videos, the director thinking there's nothing more fascinating than long tight closeups of the musicians' hands, lots of contrived shots with odd angles, etc. The video directing here is varied, well-paced, and gives a good feel for the group and its interaction.
This is a very well produced DVD of a very fine live Jazz performance. Great sound quality and intelligently edited footage. Of particular note is the evident artistry of Eddie Henderson. Great solos by Eli Degibri too. The material on this DVD represents a popular but personal tribute to Miles Davis, balanced with some choice Al Foster originals and a crowd-pleasing rendition of "Cantaloupe Island". There is a change of pianists halfway through and personally I have to admit I prefer George Colligan's slightly more sympathetic contribution. Aaron Goldberg can certainly play though. There's no doubt about that. Al Foster himself demonstrates great sensitivity and dynamism throughout, with a very personal attack and unusual cymbal technique. Drummers will definitely gain greatly from examining his comping skills and solo touches. A highly recommended purchase.
